Microsoft is developing its data center footprint in Spain. This weekend, the government of Aragon announced that Microsoft would be investing another €2.9 billion ($3bn) in developing another data center campus in Zaragoza on a plot adjacent to Puerto Venecia. The campus, located parallel to the Z-40 & close to the Puerto Venecia shopping center, will total 59 hectares. Construction on the first €582m ($610.7m) phase is due to start next year, according to Jorge Azcón, president of the Government of Aragon. He added that the rest of the campus would be built over the next 10 years. At full build-out, Microsoft’s total investment in the region could reach €10bn ($10.4bn).
Microsoft is planning to build a new data center campus in Zaragoza, Spain, with an investment of €2.9 billion. The new campus will be located near the Puerto Venecia shopping center and next to the Z-40 road. It will cover 59 hectares, and the first part of the project, costing €582 million, will start construction next year. The full project will be built over the next 10 years, and Microsoft may invest up to €10 billion in total. This is part of Microsoft’s larger plan to grow its cloud and AI services in Spain. The company already has a cloud region near Madrid and several data center projects in the Zaragoza area. Other tech companies like Amazon, QTS, and Box2bit are also building data centers in the region, making Zaragoza an important location for digital infrastructure.
Announced in 2020, the company’s first Spanish cloud region – Spain Central – launched around Madrid in June 2024 in partnership with Telefónica. Ferrovial was building a facility in the San Sebastian de los Reyes area of Madrid for Microsoft. Outside Madrid, Microsoft has an existing and growing data center presence in Aragon around Zaragoza. Microsoft first shared plans for a cloud region in Aragon in October 2023 before announcing plans to invest another €6.69bn ($7.16bn) in developing new data centers in the region last year. Microsoft last year also committed to investing $2.1bn in cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in Spain over the next two years.
Previous reports suggest the company was originally developing three sites around Zaragoza: a 63-acre site in the Recycling Technology Park (PTR); land in La Puebla de Alfindén to the east of Zaragoza & La Muela to the west. After last year’s additional investment, the company was said to be developing more campuses in El Burgo de Ebro, Villanueva de Gállego, Huesca, & Empresarium. The development of the Recycling Park site is currently on pause, though Azcón suggested the site may still be developed by the company in the future. Amazon also has a Spanish cloud region comprised of three data center sites around Zaragoza. QTS and Box2bit are also developing campuses around Zaragoza.
